About Junotane

Thanks for visiting. This simple site is functional, secure and private. If I were a busker, I’d be the one who plays the empty pedestrian tunnel with the acoustics rather than the one in the town square with the tourists and pickpockets. The site’s not as flashy and exciting as Substack, but the quality is higher and the impact longer lasting.

As noted in the welcome, my name is Jeffrey Robertson, and on this site, I write on foreign policy, diplomacy and the Korean Peninsula. I previously worked for the Australian Government doing pretty much the same except with more coffee breaks. Now I write from the other side of the line as an academic, consultant, and sometimes second-rate spy fiction ghostwriter.

I like to keep things lighthearted and chilled. Looking over our paths in diplomacy, foreign policy and Korean affairs, you’d have to be crazy to take it all too seriously. For this reason, I am cynical and often sarcastic, but it’s borne of experience. Take some time to check out the fiction where I really let loose.

On a more serious note, I do hold high-level expertise and have access to an extensive network on the diplomacy, foreign policy, and strategic affairs of the Korean Peninsula region. You can oftimes see me on BBC, Arirang, CNBC, or Channel News Asia (CNA) talking about the region, and I also regularly contribute to international relations and political affairs blogs and magazines and mainstream print media.

With more than 25 years government, consultancy and academic experience, I also undertake research, analysis, and advisory work for governments, the corporate sector, and political risk and human intelligence services providers. Contact me (see below) if you want to work together.

Subscriptions

There’s nowhere to sign up! That’s right. There is no membership and no subscription fees. This is not Medium or Substack, and the last thing I care about is monetization, subscriptions, and social media spruiking. I maintain the site because I’m passionate about foreign policy, diplomacy and the Korean Peninsula, and I love writing.

Further, there’s risks in holding email lists of people focusing on Korean Peninsula affairs. Nefarious state actors in the field have successfully hacked some of the largest corporations, and no platform is really safe. For that reason, this website does not collect any names or email addresses.

How do you know if there is a new post? On each post there is a link to support, share, comment, and/or subscribe on Buy Me a Coffee. The Buy Me a Coffee page updates within 24 hours after an article is posted.

  • To support my writing, at the center of the Buy Me a Coffee page, there is a massive and obtrusive form that allows you to support a poor, struggling, academic wannabe novelist. Many thanks to those who do!
  • To comment on a post, click on the Buy Me a Coffee link at the end of the post and write your comment on the appropriate post. You will need to log in with your email but there is, of course, no charge.
  • To subscribe, at the top right of the Buy Me a Coffee page, click the three dots and then click “follow”. Each time there is a new post, you will receive an email notification with a link.

Importantly, even though I don’t count member subscriptions, I do really appreciate every reader — and love to hear your opinions and views. Disagreement with what I write is never a problem, and it only improves analysis to hear opposing views. Feel free to contact me (see below) and let’s start a conversation.

Lastly, none of the material on this website is currently on corporate social media, and probably never will be unless you share it. Please share and tell people what you read.

Contact

Talk to me! I do not use corporate social media. I hate it. If you see anyone using the name Junotane — they’re phonies. Apparently there’s been a few, so be careful.

You can contact me by placing a taped X on the telegraph pole at the corner of Seongsan and Yonsei-ro in Sinchon. Alternatively…

You can send me a message me on Letterbird and if you add your Signal number or link, we can continue the conversation more securely. Please state who you are and what you want and I’ll be sure to respond.
